Real, Unscripted Weddings at the Denver Botanical Gardens

If you’re dreaming of a wedding day surrounded by wild greenery, soft light, and naturally beautiful backdrops, the Denver Botanical Gardens is one of the most magical places to say “I do.” As a documentary wedding photographer in Denver, this venue is one of my all-time favorites with it’s natural beauty and colorful backgrounds.

Why Couples Choose the Denver Botanical Gardens for a Real, Authentic Wedding Day

It’s naturally beautiful — so you get to stay present

The Denver Botanical Gardens offers 24 acres of lush landscapes, winding paths, and vibrant seasonal blooms. Because every corner is already visually stunning, couples get to spend more time soaking up the day instead of focusing on photo checklists or décor logistics.

The venue does the heavy lifting. You just get to live your wedding day.

Perfect for documentary-style photography

When a space feels calm, peaceful, and immersive, people relax — which is exactly what leads to the honest, emotional moments you’ll want to remember years from now.

Stolen glances. Hands held tight. A parent tearing up in the middle of a garden pathway. Your best friends losing their minds on the dance floor later. Those are the frames that matter.

The Best Photo Locations Inside the Denver Botanical Gardens

Here are a few spots where true-to-life moments unfold effortlessly — no staging, no awkwardness:

1. The Monet Pool

Soft reflections, floating lilies, and golden-hour light make this a dream for candid portraits. You don’t have to pose — just exist together and the images naturally fall into place.

2. The Japanese Garden

Quiet, minimal, and timeless. This is where your day slows down… the kind of place where you’ll catch your breath and share a moment you didn’t know you needed.

3. The Tropical Conservatory

Perfect for couples who want moody, lush, intimate photos. The humidity curls your hair a little, your dress sways differently, and every bit of it feels honest.

4. Woodland Mosaic

A charming solarium shaded by small trees. Perfect for intimate wedding ceremonies that are looking for a classic Victorian Vibe.

Portrait Sessions at the Denver Botanical Gardens

If you want the same unscripted energy for your portraits, the Gardens are one of the best places to show up as your real selves.

No pressure. No “stand here and smile at me.”
Just wander, talk, laugh, and let the natural surroundings pull you into the moment.

Two locations for the price of one.

The Denver Botanical Gardens sits right next door to Cheesman Park which offers a pavilion and lots of open green space to explore.

I’ve photographed weddings where the ceremony took place at Cheesman Park and the cocktail hour was held at Denver Botanical Gardens, followed by the dinner and dancing back at the pavilions at Cheesman Park. It’s a great option for smaller, intimate weddings where you don’t need to use the giant ballroom inside Mitchell Hall.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Denver Botanical Gardens Wedding Photos

Plan around the light

Soft mornings and golden sunsets are unbeatable here — they make skin glow and moments feel cinematic.

Wear something you can move in

You’ll want to explore, sit, cuddle, wander, dip into shady corners… comfort means better candids.

I recommend a wedding dress that isn’t too long because it can get snagged onto one of the plants as you’re walking through the gardens. It will also get a little dirty so make sure you have your partner or bestie hold up the dress if you care to keep it clean and white. Please note: You will lose some of that spontaneous “in the moment” energy for photos if you’re worried about keeping the dress clean so keep that in mind.

Trust the moments, not the poses

Your best photos will happen when you forget the camera is even there. That’s why I love to stand back and take photos from a distance while my couples explore the gardens on their own without interference from me.

Why I Love Photographing Weddings at the Denver Botanical Gardens

Every time I photograph a wedding here, I walk away with vibrant images that feel like the couple — not just pretty pictures of a pretty place.

I allow the couple and guests to interact with their environment while I carefully observe and snap moments. The gardens are a big place with a variety of different settings to play in. Some spots offer lots of color while others feature textures and cleaner designs with earth tones that are more muted.

I highly recommend Alyssa with Poised Events. She’s familiar with the space as we’ve worked together before at the Denver Botanical Gardens.

She will give you a detailed map with outlines for your ceremony space along with a vendor list. And she’s great with communication through detailed emails along with Zoom calls to help make sure everything runs smoothly. She’ll also help you plan your entire timeline for the day.
